I enjoy walking and always have. While walking around town only a few miles from home, I can daydream for hours and escape to far away places. I can get away and be alone with my thoughts.

In 2010, I decided to walk with a purpose and I set a goal to walk 25,000 miles over 10 years. Why 25,000 miles? I was thirty-four years old and decided I would walk 2 miles for each day I had been alive.

34 X 365 X 2 = 24,820

Then, I rounded up figuring that would make up for leap years plus a few more extra days.

Today begins a life changing experience as I experiment with new ways to share my stories. I have shared some of my experiences via facebook and Twitter. When I accomplish my 25,000-mile goal, I will be a completely different person in ways that I cannot yet imagine. I know I will become a better person after this challenge.

So far I have walked 540 miles. I have a long way to go. I hope you will walk & talk with me.

  • Congratulations on your goal and initial progress toward it. I look forward to your commentary and exchanging ideas with you. Sincerely, Gary

  • I hope we can walk together again very soon! And I’m sure 2012 will be full of great stories! :)

  • Terry, the circumference of the earth at the equator is ~24,902 miles so you could also think of yourself as walking around the world! By the way, recent intensive research shows that there are places to walk in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. Just sayin’…..

    • Gary – I love that you are a professor! I am sure I’ve read that fact somewhere before. And, of course, I forgot it. And, yes TheBeltWalk will tour BG. :)

  • Happy New Year my dear friend. Can’t wait to read your stories – hopefully we can put on our walkin’ shoes together this year! Miss you-

  • When Janet Reno was Attorney General, she would spend Saturdays walking stretches of the C&O canal. I don’t know if she got all the way up. What is your cuurent walking goal?

  • I just had a flashback to the scene in Forrest Gump where he has been walking and walking and is in the desert and his beard is scruffy but many people are following him….. and suddenly he just stops. Please promise you will never replicate that scene. Yyyccchhh!!! Perhaps you could have someone post a picture of you walking so we can have THAT image in our heads instead?

    • Gary – Ha! There’s no tellin’ what I’ll do. :)

  • Another flashback! Nancy Sinantra is singing “These Boots Are Made For Walking!” There’s a music video! Terry is striding along the Potomac (in walking shoes, not shiny white boots)! She’s stepping on a likeness of George Bush! Now she’s striding through a cornfield! A deep voice intones “If you build it she will walk through it!” Kevin Costner spins round and round because that’s not in the script! Oh my! Another bust day on The BeltWalk!

    • This is great, Gary! I like it.

  • Terry, now that’s a New Year’s Resolution that beats all others!

I walked 12,500 miles 2001-2007, so I know what you’ve got ahead of you! Lots of fun and adventure! The way life should be! Good luck and I hope to walk into you! ;)
